FAQ

What does a Dala horse symbolize?

The Dala horse operates on several different levels of meaning. You can break its symbolism down into three main categories:

  • Strength, Loyalty, and Survival: Historically, horses were invaluable coworkers in the harsh Swedish winters, pulling timber from the forests and working the farms. The Dala horse symbolizes the deep bond between humans and animals, and the sheer resilience required to survive.

  • Warmth and Home: They began as toys carved by hand in the winter-dark cabins of the Dalarna region. Forestry workers would carve them by the fire for their children back home. Thus, it carries a deep sense of family comfort, paternal love, and mysigt (coziness).

  • National Identity and Pride: This is its modern avatar. Ever since it became a massive hit at the 1939 New York World's Fair, it has symbolized Swedish craftsmanship, tradition, and global identity.

Why are Dala horses so expensive?

The short answer? Every authentic Dala horse is a completely unique, hand-crafted work of art.

When you buy an authentic Swedish Dala horse, you aren’t paying for factory assembly-line plastic. Instead, you are supporting a 400-year-old tradition. Each horse is individually carved from slow-growing Swedish pine, dipped multiple times in high-quality lacquer, and meticulously hand-painted by a master artisan using the traditional kurbits (patterned floral) style.

Because no two brushstrokes are identical, no two horses are exactly alike. You aren't just purchasing a decorative item; you are investing in a piece of Swedish history that can be passed down through generations.

What does Dala mean in Swedish?

"Dala" is short for Dalarna, a picturesque region in central Sweden known for its deep forests, rolling hills, and rich cultural traditions.

In the Swedish language, Dalarna means "The Valleys." Because the very first horses were carved by woodcutters in the small villages of this province during the long, cold winter nights, they became known globally as Dala horses (Dalahästar). Today, the region is widely considered the heartland of Swedish folk tradition!
